Brazilian Waxing 101: Everything to Know Before Your First Brazilian Wax

Thinking about booking your first Brazilian wax? It’s completely normal to have questions about what happens during the appointment, how much hair you need, how to prepare, and what your skin may feel like afterward.

Knowing what to expect can make your first appointment much easier. Here’s everything you should know before booking a Brazilian wax.

What Is a Brazilian Wax?

A Brazilian wax removes unwanted hair from the intimate area using professional wax. Unlike a bikini wax, which focuses primarily on hair outside the bikini line, a Brazilian provides more complete hair removal.

At BareIvory, Brazilian waxing is performed using professional hard wax and a skin-conscious approach designed to provide smooth, long-lasting results while prioritizing comfort and proper skin care.

How Long Should Your Hair Be?

For the wax to properly grip the hair, you need enough growth before your appointment.

A good rule of thumb is approximately ¼ inch of hair, or about the length of a grain of rice. For many people, this means allowing roughly 2–3 weeks of growth after shaving, although individual growth rates vary. If your hair is too short, the wax may not be able to remove it effectively.

Don’t shave right before your appointment. Even if the growth looks longer than you’d like, leave it alone. Your wax professional can handle it.

Make it stand out

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

What Happens During a Brazilian Wax?

Your wax professional will guide you through positioning throughout the appointment, so you don’t need to know what to do beforehand.

Professional hard wax is applied to sections of the treatment area and removed once set. The process continues until the service is complete.

Your first appointment may take a little longer than future visits, particularly if you’ve been shaving or haven’t been waxed recently.

And yes — your wax professional does this professionally. There’s no reason to feel embarrassed about your body, hair growth, or anatomy.

Does a Brazilian Wax Hurt?

Waxing removes hair from the root, so you should expect some level of temporary discomfort.

However, everyone’s sensitivity and pain tolerance are different. First-time appointments can feel more intense because the hair may be thicker or more deeply rooted after consistent shaving.

With regular waxing, many clients find their appointments become easier to tolerate over time.

What About Ingrown Hairs?

Ingrown hairs occur when hair becomes trapped beneath the skin or grows back into the skin instead of outward. They’re particularly common in areas with coarse or curly hair.

Consistent aftercare can help reduce their occurrence.

Once the skin has had time to recover from waxing, maintaining an appropriate exfoliation and hydration routine can help keep dead skin from accumulating around the follicles.

If you’re experiencing persistent ingrowns, bumps, congestion, or discoloration, an intimate skincare treatment such as a vajacial may also be incorporated into your routine.

How Often Should You Get a Brazilian Wax?

For most clients, Brazilian waxing works best on a consistent schedule of approximately 4–6 weeks, although your ideal timing depends on your individual hair-growth cycle.

Consistency is important.

Waxing regularly allows more of your hair growth to begin falling into a similar cycle. Shaving between appointments interrupts that process and can make your next wax less consistent.

If you decide to become a regular waxer, put the razor down between appointments.

Can You Get Waxed During Your Period?

WAX WITH CONFIDENCE

Yes! Getting a Brazilian wax during your period is completely common and doesn’t mean you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment.

For hygiene and comfort, a tampon or menstrual cup must be worn during your service.

Some people may experience slightly increased sensitivity during their menstrual cycle due to hormonal changes, but this varies from person to person and doesn’t prevent you from being waxed.

Your period doesn’t have to interrupt your waxing routine.

Can You Get a Brazilian Wax While Pregnant?

PREGNANCY + WAXING

Yes! Brazilian waxing during pregnancy is very common, and many clients continue their regular waxing routine throughout pregnancy.

Hormonal changes can sometimes make the skin more sensitive, so your wax may feel slightly different than usual. As your belly grows, positioning can also be adjusted throughout your service to keep you comfortable.

YOUR ROUTINE CAN GROW WITH YOU.

Your First Brazilian Doesn’t Have to Be Intimidating

The hardest part for many first-time clients is simply not knowing what to expect.

Come with adequate hair growth, follow your pre- and post-wax instructions, stay consistent with your appointments, and take care of your skin between visits.

At BareIvory, Brazilian waxing combines professional hair removal with a skin-conscious approach to help maintain smooth, comfortable, healthy-looking skin.
